Antiretroviral drugs act in two essential stages of human immunodeficiency virus infection. Stage 1 inhibits reverse transcriptase, thus preventing the formation of the viral DNA chain. In stage 2, protease inhibitors prevent the formation of proteins in the virus structure.

Abacavir works by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme through a metabolite, which prevents the binding of DNA through RNA, thereby inhibiting viral replication. Lamivudine works by inhibiting DNA synthesis, interrupting the formation of the viral chain and reducing the release of virions in infected cells.
